As a printmaker I have learned that some artists define this term differently. For me, it is a print which is made entirely by the artist, whether it is a linoleum block print, a woodcut, a silkscreen, an etching, a lithograph or some combination of these. I also pull prints from gelatin plates, Styrofoam, cardboard, found objects and fabric, to name several less traditional plate types. I make or carve the block, or etch the plate, or draw the drawing which is used in photo transfer—whatever technical means I employ, it is all made by me. When I use photographs, I almost always take the photo myself, although occasional random images drift into my collages. Finally, I print the image myself, either by hand or using a press. I pull one print at a time, using a traditional method of comparing each print to a standard print which I have judged to be of excellent quality. Most of my work to date has been in editions no greater than 25 prints. I do not sell photocopies or digital prints, giclee or any mechanically reproduced or altered prints. (I am not saying those are bad things. I just don’t sell them.) I love the process, and if you want to learn more about it, this is the place.
